Ok, so I found myself in a "low income" area of East Los Angeles and I decided to stop into a Mcdonalds to pick up chicken nuggets and a sundae. As I was in there, waiting patiently because there were like a hundred people (mostly little kids) running around trying to order, I started to look around. And this is when my little mind went racing. And thats when I noticed two different things that made me worried and concerned about the physical and financial health of my fellow citizens.
Number one, I noticed the huge 'playground' "chuck e cheese' 'jungle jim' in the back of the place. Now I know that companies are made to make money, but I'm a little concerned at the strategy to get these parents to use their facility as some form of free day care or entertainment, and in turn, they end up buying more and more fattening food. Then the kids not only think about their favorite foods, but also the chance to want to go back and play some more in the back area.
Number two, I saw something I never thought I would see in a fast food restaurant............an ATM............That's right, an ATM !!! Ok, this disturbs me. I'm starting to feel bad for these parents, using the little money that they have, buying their kids unhealthy food, and having to get money out of an ATM (plus the fee to get the money) to do it......
Is this where we want to go with our society? Its bad enough that we have to be swarmed with yearly marketing schemes by companies to pick and choose which kids item they feel like promoting and make the "must have" for these poor parents to have to go out at 4am the day after thanksgiving to physically fight off each other to get.......But now we see, more and more, efforts by big business to do whatever they can to attract children to their product. Play areas not only at fast food places, but also malls, sporting events, and so on and so on. It seems like its either the kids using their parents to get them what they want, or its the parents using the kids (and the free day care) to get what they want. What ever happened to "family night". I feel like my fellow citizens are willing to spend whatever money they have left to either shut their kids up, or give themselves an opportunity to enjoy something for themselves, (i.e. a sporting event, or an hour so working out at a local gym). We need better options. And we need to stop letting big business make these decisions for us.
Somebody please do something........................
